Kind of an awkward title I know but pretty much describes this post. First up, palette. I worked on the white table cloth in the painting this particular morning and thought it would be interesting to see what goes into the white in this particular painting. I mentioned on the previous post that I had read about a technique I wanted to try in the A History of American Tonalism: 1880-1920. I am not sure if this is a good place to use it but I wanted to try it. It involves laying down a warm undertone and painting a cool complimentary color into it. I tried that on the white cloth. I am not sure I like it here but it isn't so bad that I will take it out. Here is the painting still in progress:

Finally, the "changes in the wind". I am sure many, if not all, of you have heard of Pinterest, both the controversy and the excitement of using it. I will be joining in the next day or two in spite of a few reservations but, I had a bit of work to do. I went through my website and Facebook page and put copyright text either on the picture, in the title description, or both. I really didn't want to put a watermark of sorts on my pictures as I feel it can be distracting but I feel at this time it is the prudent thing to do. I don't mind having my work shared or "pinned" at all but I do want the proper credit! Not everyone is aware of giving the proper credit, although they should be. I always do my best to credit and provide links back to the original source too. It takes a tiny bit more time but I feel it is the right and respectful thing to do.
I would love to hear what you all think of the whole Pinterest thing. Please do leave a comment and let me know what you think. The best information I have read so far has been on a recent post (3/2/12) from Alyson B. Stanfield's Art Biz Blog. Click on the link and take a look for yourself!
Oh! I just noticed my wee skeleton model peeking through the easel in the top photo. Do you see him?
-Renee

Your painting is coming along very nicely Renee! I do like that reflection from the glass, so pretty. :) And I agree with you about Pinterest. I really am ok with people pinning me as long as the photo links back to my site and I'm given credit as artist. Just today I found a BEAUTIFUL painting on Pinterest but could not find out who the artist was. Which was infuriating, and frustrating. I think you're right, the best thing we can do to protect ourself is what you're doing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Crystal! I am pretty much hearing the same thing about the whole social media deal from other artists, particularly those who have had their work online longer than I have. Fortunately for me at this time, I don't have much so it wasn't too bad a chore to go back and make changes! Even so, I am not sure I want to go back and republish all the blog pages. I might just let it stand at that since I don't have as much at stake at this point. I appreciate your comment and your encouragement!
ReplyDeleteI posted elsewhere on LinkedIn about Pinterest issues but what now bothers me most is the amount of time social media are already taking from me ! If I joined Pinterest too ....besides I guess I like words with my images ! Like in this blog of yours you have all this interesting technical stuff explaining each painting and its stages . I really learn a lot from it .
ReplyDeleteOh I like the white tablecloth a lot. And yes, I saw your little boney friend peeking out. If he waves though, I'm outta here! ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything about pinterest...I joined months ago and have done nothing with it, not even visited. I will check out your link though so I have more than an inkling what might be going on.Seems that my plate is just about as full as I ned it or want it to be. I'd rather spend my time catching up with the blogs I love, like yours!
Hi Theresa, my husband shares the same sentiment about my little friend. I would love to have a full size one but the price, and the expression on my husbands face, has delayed that purchase so far. I even offered to keep it in the closet but so far I don't have the heart to freak him out too badly.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the time. I think I would put blogging and reading blogs first, then Facebook and a special women's artist group on LinkedIn I joined. I like Facebook because I can dance my way through in five minutes or so with a "like" here, a hooray comment there or condolences and prayers for those in need. Theresa, I am so hooked on your blog, it is the first one I look for when I am catching up on my reading!
@Rukshana, I have to agree, the time factor has delayed my joining Pinterest. Working in the studio is my priority and takes up much of my time. My studio is a computer/phone free zone. Thanks for stopping by!
